Ipswich Borough Council has announced the results of a major consultation exercise over the future of arts and entertainment in the town.

The results showed the most popular form of entertainment were concerts in Ipswich's parks (68%), while nine out of 10 people wanted to see investment in arts and entertainment maintained or increased. Some 48% wanted the Regent Theatre to be a "high priority" for investment. The Wolsey Theatre got top votes as being "essential" for the town, with the Corn Exchange also receiving strong support. There was also recognition from written submissions and feedback that Ipswich Borough Council should not foot the bill alone for arts and entertainment. This was echoed at a public meeting, with several members of the audience urging the Borough Council to continue to seek financial help from neighbouring councils.

Other results of the survey showed that more than 90% of respondents said they wanted a "wide range" of arts and entertainment in Ipswich while 87% wanted facilities for amateur groups. Just over half (52%) thought arts and entertainment was good vale for money to the council tax-payers.

A total of 1,435 questionnaires were returned to the Council, more than a fifth from angle readers. If you want a full report please contact us on 01473 432031 or visit the website: www.ipswich.gov.uk.
