Ipswich's famous links with Admiral Lord Nelson will be further strengthened this year by the arrival of HMS Pickle, the ship that brought the news of the victory at Trafalgar and at the same time the news of the death of Nelson to England in November 1805.
The replica schooner will sail into the Waterfront on 22nd September for an extended visit. During that time, schoolchildren and local people will get the chance to find out more about this key part of British history.
Nelson was High Steward of Ipswich at the time of his death and the designer of the Victory, Thomas Slade, is buried in the town.
The Pickle will sail up the Orwell, arriving in Ipswich at around 3pm. On board will be Nelson himself and the Mayor of Ipswich, Councillor Bill Wright. Nelson will be presented with an original charter of his appointment as High Steward during a reception at the Old Custom House.
The current 'replica' Pickle was built as 'Elena Maria Barbara' in Russia five years ago to the lines of the original ship and arrived in England in June last year. She has recently had an extensive refit in Gloucester, assuming the role of HMS 'Pickle' at celebrations around Britain this year.
