The character of one of Ipswich's most famous streets has been preserved. The Walk in the town centre is now protected by law thanks to the conservation team at the Borough Council.
The Walk was designed by Ipswich architects Cautley and Barefoot in 1932-33 and is a fine example of a pedestrian only shopping thoroughfare, with reproduction half-timbered narrow fronted shops and ornate carved details.
The Council asked the Government to grant Article 4(1) Direction which means permission must be sought before the outside of premises are repainted and that the yorkstone paving will be kept.
