More than 25,000 people in Ipswich will be able to travel free on all buses across Suffolk

More than 25,000 people in Ipswich will be able to travel free on all buses across Suffolk - thanks to a new concessionary fares scheme being introduced by Ipswich Borough Council.

The Council considered the Government's proposals for bringing in free off-peak travel for pensioners and people with disabilities from next year but have decided to take it a big step further. This means offering free peak-time and off-peak services throughout the county for every resident over 60 and many others with disabilities.

The deal will cost in the region of £2 million but the Government will pay a proportion of the extra cost. The Council, along with other urban areas, is lobbying for a fairer distribution of financial support so it meets the full cost of the Chancellor's initiative.
