The new Mayor of Ipswich is Councillor Bill Wright, an Ipswich "boy" through and through. Councillor Wright was born in April 1939, he was educated at Priory Heath Secondary School and left school when he was 15 years old. He joined a local firm of cabinet makers in St George's Street as an apprentice and then in 1957 at the age of 18 he joined the Army, served his country for three years, much of the time in Germany. On returning to civilian life he found employment at Cliff Quay Power Station as a rigger. In 1967, after nine years at Cliff Quay, Councillor Wright started his own business, which trades under the name of Reeve and Wright and is a non-food cash and carry firm. He is Chairman of the company.
Councillor Wright was first elected to Ipswich Borough Council in 1987 and has served on most of the Council's committees and before he became Mayor in 2005 he was a member of the Executive.
"I am delighted to be elected as the first Conservative Mayor for 26 years but I want to stress that I will, like my predecessor, be a Mayor for all the people."
The Mayor has chosen "Helping Ipswich" as the theme for his year in office and is supporting three charities: Suffolk Carers East Anglia's Children's Hospices - Ipswich Macmillan Nurses, Macmillan Cancer Relief
