The Ipswich Charter Hangings are on display in the Tourist Information Centre until the end of March 2006.
These eight embroidered panels, which chronicle the history of Ipswich over the past thousand years, were originated by textile designer Isabel Clover, who was commissioned by Ipswich Arts Association as its contribution to the Millennium celebrations. The panels were created by more than 40 of Isabel’s students.
A book about the Charter Hangings and sets of postcards are also available. Isabel Clover gives a fascinating overview of the whole working process plus lots of historical information. After an introduction by local historian Dr John Blatchly, Isabel gives an account of the eight panels, all with illustrations. The book, “The Ipswich Charter Hangings” by Isabel Clover, costs £7.95 and a set of postcards is £2.50.
