Team Ipswich is proud to announce that the town has been awarded the British Cycle Speedway Individual Championship and the British under 16s Individual Cycle Speedway Championship in August 2007. The announcement comes just days after Ipswich Cycle Speedway Club hosted an extremely successful International fixture between Great Britain and Poland.
Tim Snook, former Ipswich rider and British Champion puts the significance of this competition into context, "The British Championships can be considered the pinnacle of the sport, often harder than the World Championships. The standard of competition will be of the highest level and Ipswich is certainly the best venue for this prestigious event."
Hosting this competition is not only a coup for Ipswich but also for other local clubs with the semi finals taking place at Kesgrave, Great Blakenham and Somersham with a total of 48 riders taking part from all over Britain. The top 16 scoring riders will then go forward to the finals at Ipswich. The under 16s competition will emulate this, with finals also taking place at Ipswich's home venue, Whitton Sports Centre.
Ipswich is no stranger to the event and is hoping to have a large local representation in 2007 with an estimated 15+ riders in both the open age category and the U16's. The future stars being tipped for success include Adam Peck, Lewis Osborne, Daniel Pike and Lee Richardson.
Ipswich Cycle Speedway Club is the biggest club in the country and along with Kesgrave, Great Blakenham and Somersham they are members of Team Ipswich Cycling. All are very keen to promote sport in Ipswich and hosting this prestigious event will undoubtedly promote Ipswich through Sport.
