The route through Holywells Park and Landseer Park is designed to keep cyclists of all ages safe by allowing them to avoid the busy roads nearby. The paths in the parks have been improved and are quite wide so cyclists will be able to share them with pedestrians. The route, which is being monitored for the next 12 months, forms part of National Cycle Route 51. Funding for the scheme has come from the Local Transport Plan. In the past, cycling has not been allowed in the parks. Improvements and safety measures in the parks included laying an anti-skid surface on steep sections, surface repairs and the installation of rubber humps to keep speed down.
The opening of the route followed widespread consultation with cycle groups, park users and the police. Children from Cliff Lane Primary School took part in the official opening in Holywells Park. Cycling in Christchurch Park will be allowed later this year.
