Thursday 20th December marks the first National 2012 Day and Ipswich Borough Council's Crown Pools will be celebrating it with an event that everyone is welcome to join.

Their aim is for swimmers on the day to complete a combined total of 2012 lengths of the competition pool by 4pm. Adults and children who are able to swim will be encouraged to contribute as many lengths as they can on the day, even if that's only one. Hopefully, the target of 2012 lengths will be achieved by the target time, when a number of the Team Ipswich Elite athletes will be meeting to swim the last length.

National 2012 Day will be held each year on the 20th December between now and 2012, with the aim of raising the profile of the Games and the subsequent legacy that will benefit the whole county.

Councillor Judy Terry, Ipswich Borough Council's portfolio-holder for Arts, Culture & Leisure, said: "This is a great opportunity for Ipswich to mark National 2012 Day with an event that is easy to take part in and involves teamwork. It also provides an opportunity for our elite athletes and potential 2012 Olympians and Paralympians to make their contribution towards raising the profile of the forthcoming Games."
