Major improvements to the film theatre in Ipswich were welcomed by Borough Council chiefs just a week ahead of the venue’s take-over by an independent cinema company.
Norwich-based Hollywood Films has agreed a five-year deal to run the Council-owned specialist cinema. Hollywood has announced an exciting new programme in both screens one and two and is hoping to launch a season of Bollywood films and possibly the first ever Ipswich film festival.
Today, contractors were in the Corn Exchange venue putting in new seats after the old ones were removed over the weekend. Hollywood is also planning to install Dolby digital sound and update the décor ahead of an end-July launch.
The Council recognises that the screen one programme has had to be suspended for a few days and apologises to customers for any inconvenience. Screen two is still operational throughout ahead of the Hollywood Film Theatre launch on 25th July with the new Simpsons film.
Councillor Judy Terry, Arts, Culture & Leisure portfolio-holder, said: “We welcome this move by Hollywood. This shows a major commitment not only to specialist cinema but also to loyal film fans in Ipswich. A new look is important as we enter a new era with the film theatre. I am sure that people who were customers at the old IFT will enjoy the more luxurious surroundings. I am also sure that Hollywood will build up a new and much bigger fan base. We all wish them well in the future.”
