A new butt and gum waste bin is being given a trial in Ipswich town centre as the Borough Council opens a new front in the war against grime.

The special bins are attached to lampposts so there is absolutely no excuse for dropping cigarettes and chewing gum (not that there was one before).

The Borough Council's StreetCare team, complete with "Big Cig", will also be handing out free Stubbi butt pouches to smokers on the Cornhill on Monday 29 September from 11am to 2pm.

On display will be a clear tube full of butts picked up in the town centre in just one day, with the message: "Is this your dirty old butt?"

Councillor Louise Gooch, the Council's Environment portfolio-holder, said: "We are targeting a minority of people who throw down their cigarette butts and spit out their chewing gum. They wouldn't grind them into their carpets at home so they shouldn't do it in the street, either. It all costs money to clean up and that is the public's money so we hope these high-profile campaigns will make a difference and change attitudes."

Cleaning the town centre costs £385,000 every year - £30,000 of that is spent on gum-busting.
