Ipswich today paid tributes to former Mayor Henry "Harry" Davies, a long-serving Borough Councillor who died last night (Wednesday).
Councillor Davies, a Conservative Councillor for Castle Hill Ward, was elected Mayor in May 2006 and became Deputy Mayor a year later. His wife, Pauline, was Mayoress and then Deputy Mayoress.
Councillor Davies was a former Chair of Licensing Committee and Vice-Chair of Planning Committee.
He was born in London before the War but he had strong Suffolk roots. His grandfather was a Freeman of the City of London and his mother was born in Occold. His family moved to Ipswich in 1943, where Harry attended Clifford Road School and joined the local Sea Cadet Unit before enrolling in the Royal Navy at the age of 17. After a career with the Post Office, he retired early in 1986.
Councillor Davies died in Ipswich Hospital after a long illness. He leaves wife Pauline, a son and a daughter and three grandsons.
Council Leader Liz Harsant said: "Harry Davies will be sadly missed by many, many people. He was a good Councillor but, more importantly, he was a good man, very kind and helpful. He was a friend to many in the town and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this sad time."
