Local youngsters wanting to feel fitter are going to Crown Pools on Sunday as a treat for taking part in the MEND programme.

Mend stands for Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do it! It is a fun and effective solution focused on families with children who struggle to maintain a healthy weight. The youngsters have been signposted to the MEND programme either by their school, GP, local pharmacy or through the media. The key to MEND's success is an integrated approach, combining all of the elements known to both treat overweight effectively and ensure long-lasting results.

The programme is split into three elements:

  • Mind is simple but effective behavioural change techniques;
  • Nutrition involves stimulating group-based activities and lessons combining basic healthy nutrition guidelines, such as "five a day" and choosing MEND-friendly foods. Local company MyJuice will be providing some food and smoothies;
  • Exercise is a specially adapted programme for kids based on popular children's games, music and sport and led by people with specific training.
