Three sites in Ipswich are being earmarked for potential wind turbines under plans approved by Ipswich Borough Council's Executive committee. The Council will invite commercial developers to consider constructing one or two wind turbines at land around Thorrington Hall, at Ravenswood (either side of the A14) and at the Bury Road park and ride site.

Each wind turbine would power the equivalent of 1,200 homes although the energy generated would be fed directly into the National Grid. Five wind turbines would give Ipswich 4% of its energy via renewables.

Councillor Louise Gooch, Environment portfolio-holder, said: "This is an important part of our green agenda. The East of England aims to provide 10% of its energy from renewable sources by 2010 and we want Ipswich to play its full part. Building wind turbines would also enable Ipswich to slash its carbon footprint.

"Wind power is sustainable and secure - vital if we are to reduce our reliance on depleted stocks of fossil fuels, which contribute to CO2 emissions and climate change. Wind energy is a proven technology and is widespread in much of Europe. However, it is not the only answer and we need to be alive to other renewable power solutions so our children can continue to enjoy living in this lovely part of the country."

Independent experts will undertake consultation at each of the short-listed sites. Views of residents will be gathered and trial masts deployed to assess which sites are most likely to deliver best results before any turbine is installed.

Borough Council Executive members Paul West and John Carnall joined Councillor Gooch for a visit to an eco-tech centre in Swaffham, Norfolk, to find out more about wind turbines and renewable energy.
