The new Mayor of Ipswich is David Hale, a retired fire fighter who was born in the town. He has chosen "courage" as the theme of his year in office.

He took office at the annual Mayor-Making ceremony in the Corn Exchange last night (Wednesday) and told colleagues: "Being asked to be Mayor made me feel very proud and humble. I can promise you one thing: I will do my very best to represent all the people of Ipswich. I am looking forward to meeting thousands of people from all walks of life and listening to what they have to say."

Councillor Hale, a Conservative representing Holywells Ward since 1999, spent 31 years in the Fire Brigade, ending up as Assistant Divisional officer based in Colchester Road. "I loved - and still love – the Fire Service and all fire fighters have my undying respect and admiration."

He has chosen three charities to support during his year of office: the Fire Fighters' Charity, the East Anglian Air Ambulance and the East Anglian Children's Hospice. The new Mayoress is Councillor Hale's cousin, Betty Baskett.

Last year's Mayor, Councillor Inga Lockington, is the new Deputy Mayor. During her year as Mayor, she awarded the Freedom of the Borough of Ipswich to Sir Bobby Robson. She said: "Everywhere we went last year we were greeted by smiles and generous words of welcome. Being Mayor was a great honour."
