Author and historian Carol Twinch is to sign copies of her new book "The History of Ipswich", at Ipswich's Tourist Information Centre in St Stephen's Church, St. Stephen's Lane, on Saturday 21st June.
In her book, Ms Twinch unravels the intriguing – and often underrated – history of Suffolk's ancient county town from the evidence of early habitation in at least 5,000BC. Most importantly, she charts the story of more than 1500 years from when the Anglo Saxons settled here (then known as Gipeswic) to the town we know today, making it possibly the first "English" town and the longest continuous settlement in the country.
The book is illustrated with new photographs and with paintings of Ipswich from the town's own museums collections. Events and people shaping the town – including the granting of a Charter by King John, and the rise and fall of Thomas Wolsey (Henry VIII's Cardinal and perhaps Ipswich's most famous son) – are featured, as is a timeline of the town
Ms Twinch will be signing copes of the book at the Tourist Information Centre from 11am – 1pm on Saturday 21st June. The book costs £9.99. Her other books of local interest include "Ipswich, Street by Street".
