Ipswich Borough Council has 48 Councillors and a Leader and Executive system.
All 48 Councillors are elected by the public and together form Ipswich Borough Council.
The Borough of Ipswich has 16 wards. Three Councillors represent each ward.
The Councillors elect a Council Leader and a Deputy Leader. They sit on the Executive with up to eight other Councillors.
The full Council decides overall policy and sets the annual budget.
The Leader and Executive meet as a committee and decide how to spend the money agreed in that budget and make the day-to-day decisions on services.
The Council can remove the Leader, the Deputy Leader and any other member of the Executive whenever it chooses.
The Mayor of Ipswich remains a ceremonial office. The Mayor carries out ceremonial duties and chairs Council meetings as at present.
All decisions will be overseen by a Scrutiny Committee of backbench (non-executive) Councillors.
Councillors serving on a Standards Committee will ensure high standards of honesty and probity are maintained.
Committees also deal with planning, licensing and staffing matters.
The new system was introduced formally at the Council meeting on 16th January 2002.
