Ipswich Borough Council has a strategic responsibility to identify housing needs and help balance housing markets and so help meet the needs of all households. The Council undertakes this through the planning and housing systems in partnership with a range of partners in the private, public and voluntary sectors. The Council works to provide affordable rented accommodation for those who cannot afford to buy their own homes as well as developing initiatives for first time buyers, who may need help to get on the housing ladder.

In addition to ensuring the supply of affordable housing, the Council works to tackle disrepair in private sector stock, provide advice and help to homeless people, administer the housing register, manage its own housing stock and help vulnerable people with housing related support needs. Ipswich Housing Strategy sets out how the Council will meet these responsibilities.
