The East West Rail Consortium was formed in 1995 following an initiative by Ipswich Borough Council to improve access to and from East Anglia.
The Consortium brings together local authorities and railway and regional stakeholders, along with local businesses and private sector partners from across the South East and East of England.
The East West Rail (EWR) scheme is sub-divided into three sections:
- Eastern
The area to the east of Cambridge as far as Norwich, Gt Yarmouth, Ipswich and Felixstowe. - Missing Link
The area between Bedford and Cambridge. - Western
The area to the west of Bedford as far as Oxford and Bristol.
