Shared use footways and remodelling works
(updated 11 November 08)
Construction works is continuing at the Tuddenham Road / Colchester Road roundabout to convert the existing footways around the roundabout to shared use. The work includes widening the existing footways and remodelling three of the four splitter islands to make crossing safer and more convenient for both cyclists and pedestrians. Tactile paving will also be provided at the ends of the shared use footways and where pedestrians cross the road, as necessary. Works are expected to be completed during the week commmencing Monday 15 December.
Background
In November and December 2000 a series of public consultations took place concerning proposals for sustainable transport solutions along the A1214 Valley Road and Colchester Road. Since that original consultation, many schemes have been implemented, using Local Transport Plan (LTP) funding, to encourage cycling, to make crossing the road safer and to make bus stops more convenient to use.
In 2002 a toucan crossing was provided on the Valley Road arm of the roundabout and shared use footways provided from the ends of the service roads on Valley Road to the new crossing. Unfortunately at the time there was insufficient funding to complete the shared use footways completely around the roundabout. However, the Highway Authority (SCC) has provided funding from this years LTP allocation to allow these planned works to take place in 2008.
