Business Rates


Business rates are calculated by multiplying the rateable value by the government multiplier.

The government multiplier is set by central government and is adjusted in line with the rate of inflation. For the year 2008/2009 the multipliers are 0.462 and 0.458 for Small Business Rate Relief qualifiers.

Please note, from 01 April 2008 changes were introduced to the rates of liability of empty and partly occupied properties.

The Inland Revenue's Valuation Office calculates the rateable value and maintains the Rating List, which shows all rateable values. If you would like to appeal against the rateable value or if you would like advice or information about the rateable value please contact:

The Valuation Office Agency (VOA), in partnership with the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM), has developed a new website, www.mybusinessrates.gov.uk (opens in a new window). This site is designed to bring together all the information on business rates that ratepayers might want, in one place, in an easily accessible format and in jargon-free, everyday language.

Ipswich Borough Council accepts the following payment methods and frequencies:

  • Direct debit
  • Cash
  • Cheque
  • Standing Order
  • Debit or credit card - there is an additional charge for credit card payments
  • 10 monthly
  • Yearly
  • Half-yearly.

Instalments are due on the 1st of each month commencing 1st April.
