  • Our work in Community Safety is designed to make Ipswich safer and to ensure the safety of all people who live, work and visit Ipswich from all perspectives.
  • We look at both the physical and social aspects of safety within our work, and seek to support charities, local community groups and other organisations that work towards this goal.

PERSONAL SAFETY ADVICE WHILST ON FOOT

  • Be alert and walk with confidence and be aware of your surroundings, if you are using a personal stereo you will not hear someone approaching.
  • Avoid badly lit or deserted areas.
  • Try to walk as part of a group. If this is not possible make sure you let people know where you are going, the route you are taking and when you expect to arrive.
  • Walk facing the traffic so that a car cannot pull up behind you unexpectedly
  • Carry a personal attack alarm in your hand or attached to your belt (available from police stations)

If you are confronted, use your alarm, run, scream, shout to attract attention.

If you think you are being followed cross the street, more than once if necessary. If you still think you are being followed head to the nearest place where there are other people.

  • Get Home Safe
  • Don't Overdo It

IPSWICH CRIME AND DISORDER REDUCTION PARTNERSHIP

Ipswich CDRP logo

The Crime and Disorder Act 1998, as amended by the Police Reform Act 2002, places a duty on specific agencies (Ipswich Borough Council, Suffolk County Council, Suffolk Constabulary, the Primary Care Trust and Suffolk Fire Service) to work together with other agencies in the community, including the Suffolk Drug Action Team, to tackle crime and disorder and the misuse of drugs. This body is known as the Ipswich Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership.

Every 3 years the CDRP is required to carry out an audit to identify the extent of the problems in the borough and develop a strategy to deal with them. Our audit and strategy is available below.

COMMUNITY SAFETY

Ipswich Borough Council's Community Safety Unit is dedicated to working for the people of Ipswich to make their lives safer. We work with our partners, Suffolk Constabulary, Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, NHS Primary Care Trust and many local charities and organisations who work for the people of Ipswich. Details of these projects are available by clicking on the Community Safety link above.

CCTV CONTROL ROOM

Under our service area, we have the Ipswich CCTV control room, which has cameras covering the town centre and we monitor approximately 215 across Suffolk for ourselves and other local authorities. Further details are contained in the CCTV Control room page of this website. The control room is open 24 hours per day, 365 days per year and provides valuable evidence to Police and piece of mind to the people enjoying the facilities of Ipswich and specific surrounding towns. Please click on the link above for further information.

IPSWICH HEARS

We also run the HEARS personal alarm service for vulnerable people, which gives them the piece of mind to stay in their own homes knowing that if anything happens, help is at hand. All HEARS customers have a neck pendant with a button which can be pressed if they need assistance. Staff then respond immediately and have a database of information about each client and their needs to ensure that they right help is delivered. For the elderly, disabled or vulnerable, the threat of the unexpected is a constant worry. HEARS removes such worries, 24 hours per day. This service is available to anyone living in Ipswich, and will also work in the garden. Further details about this service are available on the HEARS page of this website. Please click on the link above for further information.
