Introduction
Ipswich Borough Council's Conservation Service is responsible for the care and protection of officially protected historic buildings of architectural or historic interest, conservation areas and other buildings of local interest which fall within the planning functions of the Council. Our duty is to protect and enhance historic buildings and areas for future generations to enjoy.
In brief our role is:
- Advise the Council on the historic building implications of its own development proposals and those submitted to the Council under planning legislation;
- Bring forward suitable buildings for formal protection because of their special architectural and historic interest;
- Prepare Conservation policies;
- Review the boundaries of Conservation Areas and bring forward schemes of enhancement;
- Deal with enquiries on Conservation matters;
- Offer expert advice on the proper repair and maintenance of historic buildings;
- Offer grants to owners of historic buildings to ensure they are kept in a good state or repair;
- Monitor the condition of historic buildings to ensure they are kept in a good state or repair;
- Offer administrative and where appropriate, technical and financial assistance to outside local bodies specifically established to promote or maintain historic building conservation: Ipswich Historic Churches Trust; Ipswich Building Preservation Trust; Ipswich Conservation Advisory Panel.
- Promote interest in the historic building heritage by talks and printed material.
Our full role of functions are set out on our Conservation Service Statement. This is reviewed annually.

Help us to help you!
