This information aims to outline housing options for older people approaching, or at retirement age who wish to move home.

Please note there are other options available for those wishing to stay in their present home.

A Smaller Home

If you are an Owner/Occupier and wish to move, it is essential that you get independent financial advice before making any commitment. You will find various schemes aimed at those of retirement age.

If you are a Council or Housing Association Tenant it is worthwhile speaking to your landlord about any incentive schemes that may be available if you move to a smaller property.

Council Housing

If you would like to be considered for Council Housing it is essential that you complete a housing register application form. Your housing need will be assessed. You may qualify for ground floor accommodation, but you will only be considered for a bungalow if the Council and an occupational therapist from Social Services consider that you qualify for 'disabled category'.

For more information on the Council's Housing Register, please ask to see the leaflet 'The Housing Register'

Sheltered Housing

Sheltered housing usually comprises of a group of flats or bungalows with a Scheme Manager who will respond in the event of an emergency.

Sheltered Housing is for people who are mostly independent, but need the reassurance that emergency help is available if required.

Sheltered Housing can be provided by local authorities, housing associations and private developers, to rent or buy.

If you are considering purchasing Sheltered Accommodation it is very important to take independent legal and financial advice.

If you wish to obtain sheltered housing from your local Council or Housing Association, you must place your name on their Housing Register at the earliest opportunity. Your present housing circumstances and need for sheltered accommodation will be considered.

Very Sheltered Housing

Very Sheltered Housing comprises self contained flats and is for those requiring at least four hours weekly care from Social Services or their family.

This type of accommodation is provided by Housing Associations, although the Council may be able to nominate you from the Housing Register.

For more general information on sheltered housing or details of Ipswich Borough Council's Sheltered Housing Schemes please ask a Housing Advisory Officer.

Residential Care Homes

If more care is needed, because an older person cannot cope without help, a residential care or nursing home may be suitable. This accommodation is arranged by Social Services.
