Race Equality Scheme
The Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 places a "general duty" on Ipswich Borough Council requiring it to ensure that "when carrying out its functions to have due regard to the need to eliminate unlawful racial discrimination and promote equality of opportunity and good relations between persons of different social groups".
All local councils must have a Race Equality Scheme. This sets out how councils will try to eliminate unlawful race discrimination, promote equal opportunities and good relations between people of different racial groups.
The Race Equality Scheme sets out those of the Council's functions and policies or proposed policies which it has assessed as relevant to the performance of the general duty, and arrangements for:
- Assessing and consulting on the likely impact of its proposed policies on the promotion of race equality
- Monitoring its policies for any adverse impact on the promotion of race equality
- Publishing the results of such assessments and consultation
- Ensuring public access to information on the services it provides
- Training for staff
Our Race Equality Scheme, Action Plan and Schedule set out what actions we will take between 2005 and 2008. The documents can be downloaded here:
Please help in the fight against racism and discrimination.
We are trying to consult as many people as possible, especially those who might have a good knowledge of racism and its effects and what the Council can do about it.
