Changing to flowering verges

We challenged why we were cutting over two million square metres of grass each year.  Results included that we changed approximately three football pitches worth of grass verges to a wild flower regime.  For general information (including benefits) see below:-

board1
Why change selected grass regimes in Ipswich?
to increase natural wildlife
to introduce more flowers
to reduce grass cutting

board2
Selecting the sites:
Choose rear of sites or out of the way places, otherwise gas, phone workmen may dig it up. Look for linked sites to create a sequence of colour along a route

board3

Added low cost colour to road verges by changing grass regime to flowering beds on Wherstead Road, Vernon Street, Bourne Bridge (west side) and near Riverside Industrial Park

board4

Flowering plants:
Remember that the flowering plants are subject to constant change.  Some species will disappear, and grasses will try to dominate.  Flowering verges need positively managing for best effect.
