Northgate Sports Centre

Northgate Sports Centre is on the north/east of Ipswich and is a joint provision between Ipswich Borough Council and Suffolk County Council. The centre is located on the Northgate High School site. It provides a wide range of sporting and leisure activities with excellent facilities, which include the athletics track and stadium

Opened in 1981 Northgate provides a balanced programme of special events, courses, casual activities and clubs. The Ipswich Harriers Athletics Club, JAFFA Joggers Running Club, Ipswich Sports for the Disabled Club, Ipswich Judo Club, Ipswich Cardinals American Football Club are just some of the Clubs based at Northgate.

Northgate has a comprehensive fitness class programme with classes available every evening Monday to Friday and Sundays. There are also some smaller daytime classes.

Bar/Committee Room
The licenced Bar is open weekdays: 6.30 - 11.00pm.
During the daytime the bar area is available for hire for meetings. Capacity 100 persons. This is adjacent to the patio area. Activities held in Bar/Committee RoomBridge Club, Suffolk Deaf Association, Volunteer Stroke Club, Weight Watchers, a variety of fitness classes. The Committee Room can be split up from the bar, and between 6.00pm - 8.00pm is available for committee meetings.

Gymnastics, table tennis, karate, aerobics, circuit training, step aerobics, legs, bums and tums, children's parties.

Squash Courts
2 courts: unsealed Maple sprung
The centre runs a squash league and also regular coaching sessions.

Athletics Track and Stadium
The 400-metre track was re-surfaced at a cost of £200,000 in 1999. It has six lanes with an eight-lane sprint straight. All the field event facilities are provided to a high specification with a UK certified hammer and discus cage. There is a 400-seat grandstand with changing facilities underneath. The athletics facility has a public address system with radio microphone and is floodlit for training. Track telephones are also used. This is the home of the Ipswich Harriers and during the winter months the centre is used for hockey. During the summer, the Ipswich Cardinals American Football Club play all their home fixtures here.

Thursday evenings - 6pm to 7pm and 7pm to 8pm
Friday evenings - 6pm to 10pm

Tennis Courts
6 hard tennis courts which can convert to 6 Netball courts (non-floodlit). These courts were resurfaced in 2001
