Ipswich Borough Council Conservation and Urban Design Team focuses on the conservation of all heritage assets and the historic environment generally. It is responsible for maintaining the statutory list of listed buildings and for the designation of locally listed buildings.

In consultation with community groups and the Council's Conservation and Design Panel, the team prepares appraisals and possible enhancement plans for the town's 14 conservation areas including the making of Article 4 Directions where appropriate.

Conservation advice is given on applications for works to listed buildings and on significant works to historic buildings within conservation areas and registered parks and gardens. Advice can also be given on traditional methods of historic building repair.

The team maintains a register of Buildings at Risk and pro-actively takes action where appropriate to secure the carrying out of necessary repair works.
