Ipswich Education Quarter
About the Education Quarter
The Education Quarter in Ipswich links the Town Centre and the Waterfront.
This area has been the focus of more than £150m investment in an effort to bring a brand new university to Suffolk - University Campus Suffolk (UCS). UCS opened it's main hub, based on the Ipswich Waterfront, in September 2008.
The Education Quarter is mainly in the ownership of three major landowners:
-
Suffolk New College;
-
Suffolk County Council;
-
Ipswich Borough Council.
Ipswich Borough Council has been a strong supporter of the UCS project from its outset and was able to take ownership of 1.94 hectares at Orwell Quay in a landswap with Associated British Ports. The Port in return acquired 5.78 hectares of land at Cliff Quay, as well as some riverbed down stream, in order to further their port operations.
By bringing all the land assets together on the Waterfront, the Education Quarter will be able to accommodate the future growth of Suffolk New College and UCS for many years to come.
The development of a brand new higher education establishment in Ipswich has also meant that major regeneration for Suffolk New College is now possible.
This development in education provision will provide the biggest boost ever to economic development in Ipswich in both the short and long term. It is a key objective in meeting the target of 30,000 new jobs in Ipswich by 2021.
These new education facilities will change life in Ipswich, encouraging new growth in the town for education, business and commerce. The new institutions will also enable new opportunities to link education with business, encouraging exciting developments for Ipswich's economic future.
