Sky Ride is coming to town

Published Friday 8th April 2011

Thousands of cyclists of all ages are expected to turn out when the first ever Sky Ride in the East of England rolls into Ipswich this summer.

Riders will be able to take to a network of car-free streets at this exciting event, which will take place between 10:00 and 16:00 on Sunday 12th June.

"This is a fantastic opportunity to get families, keen cyclists, and occasional riders together in a healthy party atmosphere," said Jonathan Owen, Director at Ipswich Borough Council. "This will be the only Sky Ride in the region and we expect a great deal of interest.

The event, which is organised by Sky and British Cycling, in partnership with Ipswich Borough Council, not only includes shutting down town centre roads to create traffic free, safe cycling environments, but also offers entertainment and guided rides - and the odd celebrity or two joining in the fun!

"This will also provide us with a fantastic opportunity to promote cycling and the other healthy initiatives we have in place here. The message is: it's time to get back on the bike!" added Mr Owen.

The route itself will take in major landmarks such as Ipswich Town Football Club, Giles Circus, Suffolk New College, UCS and the Waterfront, so an amazing one-off experience for all participants.

"The Sky Rides have been massively popular wherever they have happened," said Dominic Castle of Ipswich Bicycle Club. "Anyone of any age and ability can just get out on a bike and enjoy the fun of riding without worrying about traffic. It is going to be a brilliant day."
