Never Ending Mural creates community gallery
Published Thursday 9th June 2011
Hundreds of art works have been created by the community in support of the Never Ending Mural, an Ipswich project conceived by artist John D Edwards.
The mural, sponsored by local businesses and supported by Ipswich Borough Council, also has the support of local artists and students who helping install the mural along the Waterfront beginning 13th June.
John D Edwards explained how the project is creating its own public gallery space: "The Never Ending Mural is so exiting because it will involve anybody and everybody who wants to celebrate what is great about our town. People will be coming to Ipswich just to see it. We are already working with schools, community groups and Ipswich Hospital and have held a number of incredibly successful open workshops at Ipswich Art School and Tower Ramparts, where children and families have produced hundreds of pictures that we will recreate in large scale. The brilliant thing is that the name of the person who creates the artwork will also be displayed beside their work. We also intend to create a special Never Ending Mural gallery space for schools which might happen in Phase 2 of the project - but need a sponsor for this. The project would be a non-starter without the support of local business who are sponsoring the mural spaces."
Ipswich Central has contributed to the project and sees it as an innovative way of attracting visitors to Ipswich and raising the profile of our town centre. Paul Clement, Executive Director of Ipswich Central commented: "This is a great community project which Ipswich Central are pleased to support. We're dedicated to developing Ipswich as a truly Waterfront town and it seems to us that there's no better way to assist this than by using the mural to link the town centre with the Waterfront. The mural will definitely create a positive and uplifting atmosphere."
Further Never Ending Mural workshops are planned for the Art Fair on the Waterfront on Sunday 26th June from 10am-4pm and on Music Day at Christchurch Park on 3rd July.
