Cadets celebrating 150 years

Published Thursday 4th March 2010

The cadet movement was formed 150 years ago in readiness for a perceived invasion by France. Originally just the Army and Sea Cadets, the 20th Century saw the addition of the Air Training Corps too.

(l-r) Leading Cadet J Whight (SCC), Cadet RSM L Derrett (ACF), Cadet Cpl J Adams (ATC)2010 is the 150th anniversary of this youth organisation, with events being staged all over the country and C Company, Suffolk Army Cadet Force is no exception.

The Company, which is based at the T.A Centre on Yarmouth Road in Ipswich and has detachments at Felixstowe, Hadleigh, Woodbridge and Kesgrave, has organised events locally under the guidance of C Company Commander Major James Preston, along with T.S Orwell Sea Cadets and 188 Squadron Air Cadets, both of which are based in Ipswich.

The programme of events taking place in Ipswich between March and July can be found at http://www.cadet150ipswich.org.uk/ website. The activities reflect the fun, excitement, adventure and community service that the Cadet movement enthuses.

Events include:

  • A football match against Ipswich Town Football Club Youth Academy on 16th March, with the cadet team made up of cadets from the three organisations;
  • A combined cadet display at the Suffolk Show on the 2nd and 3rd June;
  • An 'It's a Knock-Out' at Chantry Park, supported by Ipswich Borough Council, on the 6th June;
  • A charity dinner (TBC).

The cadets come from all backgrounds and abilities and are given the opportunity to develop such skills as leadership and teamwork, buildubg confidence and self-reliance which helps them to become better citizens.

However, this would not be possible without the commitment and enthusiasm of the Adult Instructors who give their time and makes the Cadet organisations so successful.

If you think you could spare the time to be an Adult instructor (no experience necessary) please contact the Cadets for further information:
Tel: 01473 225445.

The organisation is a charity and are looking for sponsors and donations to help make the events successful. This is an opportunity to show your appreciation for the youth of Ipswich who are tomorrow's workforce.

Further details can be found on the Cadet 150 website.
