If cannabis odour from a nearby residence is affecting you and you are unable to resolve the matter informally, you can report it to us if:
- The odour is persistent
- The odour is having a detrimental effect on you, or your family’s quality of life
Please note, we are unable to proceed with complaints regarding cannabis being smoked on the street or in public spaces. These concerns should be reported to Suffolk Constabulary.
Before reporting
Before submitting a report, we encourage you to consider speaking directly with the individual responsible. In many cases they may be unaware that their actions are causing a problem. If you feel safe doing so, approach the person calmly and privately, ideally after the event to help avoid heightened emotions.
This approach can often lead to a quicker and more effective resolution. However, if you feel uncomfortable having this conversation or if the issue continues despite your efforts, you can report the matter to us.
How we respond to reports of cannabis odour
Using a single reporting system facilitated by the Council, once we have received your report we will undertake the following:
- If you are a tenant of the Council or a social landlord, we will refer your report to your Housing Officer or landlord who will review the information provided and contact you directly to discuss the matter further. Please note that once your report is referred to your landlord, we are unable to guarantee a specific response or timeframe for when they may contact you.
- If you are a tenant of a private landlord, the Council’s Anti-social Behaviour team will endeavour to work with both you and your landlord to resolve the issue wherever possible.
- If you are a homeowner, the Council’s Anti-social Behaviour team will contact you to discuss your report and consider the appropriate next steps. As part of the investigation, you are generally required to complete and return log sheets. Your details will not be shared with the source of the complaint at this stage.
Where a case is allocated to and progressed with by the Anti-social Behaviour Team, we will aim to respond to the initial report within 7 working days of receipt.
Please note the Council is only able to respond to reports within the Ipswich Borough boundary. Incidents occurring outside this area should be directed to the relevant local authority.
