Safer Streets Projects

Safer Streets are government funded projects led by the Council, aiming to work across multiple departments, teams and organisations to improve the safety of public places. 

The Council work in partnership on these projects with Suffolk Constabulary, Suffolk Police and Crime Commissioner, Ipswich Central and Suffolk County Council to bid for and deliver interventions that make a difference for Ipswich.

The Council seeks the views of businesses, organisations, agencies and public when developing the project proposals. 

Safer Streets 5

Is focused on tackling Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) in public spaces and hotspot areas.

This project has been granted £273,000.00 and runs until 31st March 2025.

Safer Streets 4

Ipswich Borough Council,successfully received $499,588.00 funding £499,588.00 to deliver training, pilot guardianship projects, marketing campaigns and purchase equipment to increase confidence and challenge perceptions plus behaviours. The area selected for this project included the Waterfront, the Town Centre, Education Quarter and Train Station.

This project ran from July 2022 - March 2023.

During the project the targeted crimes in the focus area reduced by 18.1% and maintained a 16.1% reduction afterwards.

Safer Streets 3

As part of the government’s Safer Streets round 3 fund, the Council bid for and was successfully awarded £124,391.00 to reduce violence against women and girls (VAWG) and increase women and girls’ perceptions of safety in public spaces. The delivery plan had a number of initiatives and actions. In general, the measures aimed to deter crime and reduce anti-social behaviour, therefore helping residents, visitors to the area and businesses feel reassured and safer when out and about. 

Safer Streets 3 ran from October 2021 - March 2022.

During the project the targeted crimes in the focus area reduced by 26.6% and maintained a 8.4% reduction afterwards.

Safer Streets 2

The Safer Streets 2 project received £226,200.00 of Home Office funding to focus on reducing acquisitive crime in the Westgate ward and surrounding areas.

Safer Streets 2 ran from July 2021 to March 2022.

During the project the targeted in the focus area reduced by 20.7% and maintained a 9.4% reduction afterwards.
