Looking after hedgehogs

Published2nd May 2017

A Night Safari in Holywells Park is being held on Friday 5th May from 8.15pm to 10pm.

Suffolk Wildlife Trust guides will be using thermal imaging and night vision technology to look for hedgehogs and other mammals and light traps to identify moths. Members of the Suffolk Bat Group will be joining in with bat detectors.

Next week is Hedgehog Awareness Week and this event will give you an opportunity to find out more about hedgehog recording, being an Ipswich Hedgehog Champion, and how to help with the monitoring of hedgehogs in gardens across Ipswich. A hedgehog mural is being produced at the Swan pub in the town centre.

Parks are a crucial refuge for hedgehogs. Ipswich Borough Council Wildlife & Education Ranger Joe Underwood said: “We are doing lots of habitat management work in our parks and open spaces to help hedgehogs and have created lots of areas of long grass to provide the diverse range of invertebrates that hedgehogs require to eat. We also pile up cut grass under hedges to provide areas for hedgehogs to nest and breed in and build lots of hedgehog houses at events we run in our parks."

Location for the Night Safari: Holywells Park, Cliff Lane entrance. Parking is not available in the park. Limited spaces and weather dependent. This is a free event but booking is essential – children must be accompanied by an adult.
