Assistant Building Control Surveyor

To assist Area Building Control Surveyors in the provision of the Building Control service which ensures the health, safety and welfare of people in and around the built environment.

This will involve vetting plans, carrying out consultations both internally and externally with interested parties, and carrying out site inspections of work in progress, advising clients of compliance and remedies and recording all of these duties on the council computer database. Additionally, you will need to provide a frontline service on site and in the office advising clients on Building Regulations and all Building Control matters and to assist Area Building Control Surveyors dealing with dangerous buildings and structures.

Building Control works in a competitive environment and you will be expected to promote the service in a customer focused and professional manner to maintain the departments market share.

Day to day

You will be primarily based in our Ipswich offices but should be prepared to work within our Partner offices in East Suffolk if required. You may also be required to attend meetings, training courses and seminars both inside and outside the district to develop your skills and experience.

This is a Full Time post primarily Monday to Friday during normal office working hours. However, it may be necessary on occasions to work outside of these hours dependant on the requirements of the department. You will report to the Building Control Team Leader and Area Building Control Surveyors on a daily basis.

About you

You will have an HNC or an NVQ Level 5 or professional qualification in building/construction related field and have at least three years experience in the building / construction industry and a good working knowledge of construction.

You should have an ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing, to people of all levels and external organisations and have IT skills to update the council records.

You will be expected to travel around Ipswich to work on location; on tall buildings, confined spaces, climbing ladders.

You should be able to work well as a team member and also on own initiative and have the skills to organise workload and to meet deadlines and performance standards
