Children lay poppies on graves of the fallen

Schoolchildren gathered at the Fields of Honour in Ipswich Cemetery today to lay poppies on the graves of the fallen.

The moving ceremony came almost 99 years after the guns fell silent on the Western Front in the First World War.

The Mayor, Sarah Barber, and Deputy Mayor, Roger Fern, were joined by veterans, cadets, civic leaders and children from St John’s, St Margaret’s, St Mary’s Sidegate Lane and Springfield schools.

On Sunday, the annual Ipswich Remembrance Sunday service will take place at the War Memorial in Christchurch Park at 10.50am.

The service, which is being organised by the Royal British Legion, will be attended by the Mayor, local veterans, cadets, civic leaders and the public.

After the service, the Lord Lieutenant will take the salute at the March Past near Christchurch Mansion.
