Christmas light switch on by Mayor and Panto cast with BBC Radio Suffolk

Published15th November 2022

Don’t forget that this Thursday 17 November sees the annual Christmas light switch on in Ipswich town centre!

Hosted by Wayne Bavin from BBC Radio Suffolk providing the music and compere on stage for the evening, this year’s ‘Peter Pan’ Panto cast will perform for the crowds and have the honour of switching on the lights this year with Ipswich Mayor Councillor John Cook.

The panto cast includes west end star Darren Day as Captain Hook and local actress Eliza Walker from Rushmere St Andrew as Wendy in her first professional acting role. Plus of course Matt Lapinksas from Eastenders and Dancing on Ice fame as Peter, the extremely funny Mike McLean as Smee and Gavin Ashbarry as the Panto Dame!

The entertainment kicks off from 5pm on the Cornhill in Ipswich Town Centre, with the Town Hall and Ipswich high streets illuminated by countdown at 6.45pm. Please remember that capacity is limited on the Cornhill, so you are advised to arrive early for the best view of the stage and stars.

There will be a dedicated viewing area for people with disabilities, with events staff on duty outside the Town Hall to help with access and any support required.

Councillor John Cook, Ipswich Mayor said:

“The Christmas lights switch on this year will really make the town centre sparkle. Come and join me, our panto stars and Radio Suffolk to get into the festive spirit as we welcome everyone to gather again on the Cornhill outside Ipswich Town Hall.

“With BBC Radio Suffolk and stars from Peter Pan, this year’s Ipswich Regent Theatre panto, there will be music and entertainment on stage for the evening. It’s a great opportunity to come together with friends and family to enjoy seasonal cheer at this time of year.”

The turning on of the Christmas lights marks the start of late-night shopping in the town centre with many shops extending their opening hours for Christmas shoppers every Thursday evening in the run up to Christmas.

From Thursday 17 November to Thursday 22 December, Crown Street Car Park will be extending its opening hours until 9:30pm for late-night shoppers to park for just £2.50 from 2pm onwards.
