Published15th February 2022

Crown Pools is going greener by installing a pool cover. This new cover is put over the Competition Pool at the end of the day and slows its cooling.

This initiative is part of Ipswich Borough Council working to become carbon neutral by 2030. Swimming pools are high energy users and this simple measure has a big impact. It reduces the Council’s baseline carbon footprint by 2% saving 450,000 KW/hr of gas usage and 83 tonnes of carbon usage a year. The pool cover also provide significant energy costs savings.

Cllr Bryony Rudkin, Deputy Leader of Ipswich Borough Council and Portfolio Holder for Communities and Sport, says:

“I am really pleased that we have managed to get this into place quickly and that is has such a large impact on the Council’s contribution to fighting climate change. Just this pool cover alone reduces the Council’s carbon footprint by 2%. In sports, we are continually looking at what we can do to make things greener and this is a good example of our commitment.”

Cllr Phil Smart, Ipswich Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Environment and Climate Change, says:

“We need to work hard to meet our carbon neutral target in the next 8 years and every worthwhile initiative across all of the Council’s services to help us reduce our carbon footprint will be used. It’s great that we can make easy wins like this Crown Pools pool cover. We will continue with both the harder as well as the easier tasks that we need to undertake to make sure we play our part in combatting climate change.”
