Dynamic digital road signs being installed to make finding a parking space easier

Published15th February 2022

Ipswich Borough Council are helping motorists more easily find parking spaces and reducing the unnecessary circulation of vehicles, by installing new digital signage in six places in the town centre.

The new signage will help the Council improve air quality in the town centre by reducing the need for drivers to search for a parking place by directing them to where there are spaces available. As well as showing available parking bays in town centre car parks, the signage can also display messages about road closures or major events that could affect traffic in the town centre. The works to install the signage are expected to last for two days at each location and will be completed in March.

Cllr Sarah Barber, Ipswich Borough Council Portfolio Holder for the Town Centre, says:

“This type of digital signage helps visitors to the town centre to see where the available car parking spaces are on their approach into the town. The systems monitors and displays car park spaces on a ‘real time’ basis which helps to improve air quality, avoid congestion and improves traffic flow. The goal is to enable people to get to their destinations as easily as possible, whilst at the same time helping to reduce the impact of vehicles on the environment.”
