The Council has a Private Sector Housing Renewal Policy that offers assistance to landlords and first time buyers who wish to bring a property that has been empty for longer than one year, back into use.
These grants are discretionary and subject to available funds.
Applications for Discretionary Renovation Grants will be considered to renovate properties that have been empty for over one year. To be eligible for this grant the applicant must be a first time buyer with a mortgage that is over 80%, and savings of less than £7,000.
Grant aid will be 80% of the cost of the works, up to a maximum of £20,000. On completion the property must meet the decent homes standard.
The Council will consider applications for Discretionary Landlord's Grants for the renovation of properties or flats above shops that have been empty for at least one year, to bring them back to a condition suitable for occupation.
All grants are subject to the Council's application process, terms and conditions, and the levels of grant aid available.
In exceptional circumstances, the Council may consider giving financial assistance once enforcement action has commenced against an owner.
