New Mayor and Borough Council Leadership

The new Mayor of Ipswich is Councillor Glen Chisholm, who was elected to office at the Annual Meeting of Ipswich Borough Council last night (Wednesday).

The Mayor’s consort is his 18 year-old son, Clinton.

“I am very proud of my home town and I am passionate about equality and showing respect for others and would like that to be the theme that runs through my year,” said the Mayor, who is a Councillor for Stoke Park Ward. “I have spent my working life in Ipswich and continue to work full-time in the town centre. For five years I was also a Special Police Constable in Ipswich.”

He added: “I am proud to announce that my consort for the year is my son, Clinton. We are both looking forward immensely to the year ahead, to representing the people of Ipswich and promoting our town.”

The Mayor has chosen two local charities to support in his year of office.

“The first one is Suffolk Mind, which is committed to raising awareness and promoting good mental health and wellbeing throughout the county. The second is the Sunrise Appeal by Ipswich Hospital, which helps to deliver even better care for sick babies and children.”

The outgoing Mayor, Councillor Bill Quinton, now serves as Deputy Mayor. He said: “It has truly been an honour and an unforgettable experience. My memories will be dominated by the thousands of people we met, the smiles and generous words of welcome and the warmth of the people of Ipswich. But I could not have done it without the support of Barbara, who has been an inspiration and a tower of strength.”

The Annual Meeting also elected David Ellesmere as Leader of the Council.

Councillor Ellesmere then informed the Council that the following Labour Councillors would serve on Executive Committee: Deputy Leader: Councillor Bryony Rudkin. Other members of Executive Committee: Martin Cook,Carole Jones, Neil MacDonald, Sophie Meudec, John Mowles and Philip Smart.

Conservative Group Leader Nadia Cenci has accepted an invitation to serve on Executive as a member without portfolio.

Following the election on 7th May, Ipswich Borough Council has 31 Labour, 15 Conservative and two Liberal Democrat Councillors.

The new Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group is Councillor Inga Lockington.
