New plans for Princes Street

The main gateway from Ipswich railway station to the town centre could be transformed.

Following on from the announcement that a major law firm is to relocate to a new office unit on the south side of Princes Street, the Borough Council has submitted a planning application for a site on the opposite side of the road.

The Council wants approval to demolish the Landspeed/Avanti site, which it owns, and then to present it to the market for transformation into a five-storey office development.

Council Leader David Ellesmere said: “We have submitted this application because there is a shortage of modern good quality office accommodation in Ipswich. There are a number of Ipswich firms who have been looking for quality office accommodation for some time and being unable to move to find suitable accommodation limits their ability to grow and recruit and retain staff. We don’t intend to demolish the site or build the new office without first securing a tenant but having a scheme with planning consent will enable us to act quickly should a tenant be identified.”

Earlier this year, the Council sold the freehold of the Rileys snooker/pool hall site opposite Landspeed to Churchmanor Estates to develop a new HQ for prominent legal firm Birketts, currently based in Museum Street.
