Plans for 40 more council homes unveiled

Published27th December 2019

The proposals follow the completed scheme in Cauldwell Hall Road, where tenants moved into 17 homes in time for Christmas, and the old Tooks bakery site in Norwich Road, which will see 60 homes finished by the end of 2020.

New council homes in the town are now developed for the Borough Council by its wholly-owned house-building arm, Handford Homes.

Company chair, Colin Kreidewolf, said: “All these proposals mark important developments for us and the Council. Small sites provide not only much needed new affordable homes but also local regeneration, tidying up sites that have often become eyesores.”

The six applications made by Handford Homes are:

  • Eight homes (seven houses and one bungalow) on an old lock-up garages site in Sheldrake Drive in south-west Ipswich;
  • Six flats on an old garages site and amenity area off Emmanuel Close in south-west Ipswich;
  • Sixteen homes in two four-storey blocks on a demolished commercial site in Grimwade Street;
  • Six two-bed houses in Mallard Way on a former garages site;
  • Two houses and one bungalow on the former St John Ambulance site in Coltsfoot Road, Chantry;
  • One large bungalow in Halton Crescent in the south east of the town.

The applications will be determined by the Borough’s Planning & Development Committee early in 2020.

Councillor Neil MacDonald, the Council’s Housing portfolio-holder, said: “We are helping people who cannot afford to buy or rent privately, to find a quality and affordable home. I am especially pleased that we are able to build a number of larger disability adapted properties, as there is a growing need for these.”
