Recycling campaign commended

A campaign to boost the recycling of plastics in Suffolk has been shortlisted in a national competition.

The "Plastics: Know Your Place" programme, created by officers of the Suffolk Waste Partnership, was highly commended by judges at the Awards For Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management ceremony in London but got pipped to the post by a recycling scheme from Belfast.

The Borough's Waste Services team leader, Glynis Wood, said: "I was so proud to see the campaign recognised by the judges.  Although we didn’t win, colleagues in the Suffolk Waste Partnership deserve a special 'well done' for a campaign commended for its clarity and originality."

Rob Cole, Suffolk Waste Partnership Manager added: "The campaign reached many Suffolk residents, diverted more than 800 tonnes of additional plastic from landfill and saved taxpayers' money in the process. It was a ground-breaking approach which influenced our recent fly-tipping campaign and has been well received by other local authorities and industry bodies."
