School students help to promote park orchard

An information board about the Christchurch Park orchard produced by Ipswich School students and local artist Reg Snook will be unveiled on Thursday (26th February).

Students provided the text to accompany illustrations drawn by Reg, who is a long-serving member of the Friends of Christchurch Park. The board, which has been funded by Landex Living, promotes the orchard which was planted in memory of the late David Mapus-Smith, who worked for the Borough Council. The orchard recreates an 18th Century orchard, similar to one that stood in the park many years ago.

The board will be installed at 3pm by members of the school’s "Green Team" and the Council’s parks staff.

"It is great for the school to be supporting the Council's work in the park. Producing things from nest boxes to information boards is both educational for our students and good for the community," says Ipswich School teacher Dr Paulina Taraskin, who runs Ipswich School's Green Team, which helped research the orchard information board and which has been involved in voluntary conservation work in Christchurch Park for the past 10 years. Ipswich School is also a corporate member of the Friends of Christchurch Park.
