Six young Sports Leaders qualify on Ipswich Borough Council course

Published9th March 2022

Six young people in Ipswich aged between 12-16 have now qualified as Level 1 Sports Leaders at a course run at Eastern Angles on Gateacre Road, Ipswich by the Council.

Sports Leaders UK is a national award that upskills and trains people to become sports leaders and enables them to deliver sports activities to groups. The Sports Leaders course at Eastern Angles included planning activities, organising sessions and delivering activities and the six are now qualified to assist in the delivery of activities across a range of sports.

The course is part of Ipswich Borough Council’s programme to offer opportunities for young people to gain more skills and qualifications and also to increase chances for them to build a career within the sport and leisure field. The sport and leisure sector has a range of different opportunities and career pathways and in order to benefit from these, people working in the sector need to be qualified and this course is the first stepping stone for young people to build such a career.

The course was funded through the Safer Streets programme which was awarded to the Maple Park area last year.

Says Cllr Colin Kreidewolf, local Ipswich Borough councillor and who was present at the course:

“It was great to see these young people obtain this nationally recognised qualification whilst also enjoying themselves. I could see they were inspired and found the benefits of becoming Sports Leaders useful. This will enhance their interest in sports and can also provide a route to an interesting career.”
