Supermarket giant fined

Supermarket giant Morrisons has been left £80,000 out of pocket after an employee slipped and fell at a store in Ipswich.

The Borough Council took the company to court over the fall on a wet floor in the fish bar area of the Sproughton Road store in 2012. It is the second time Morrisons has been prosecuted and fined for a similar incident in the same store.

Morrisons pleaded guilty to failing to ensure the health and safety of an employee and was fined £40,000 and ordered to pay the prosecution costs of £40,000.

At Ipswich Crown Court, Recorder Christopher Makey said the employee’s injuries had been "incredibly painful" for a time after the accident.

A Council spokesman said: "We are pleased that Mr Recorder Makey took this offence very seriously and that is reflected in the size of the fine and costs against Morrisons.”
