The town centre church housing Ipswich’s Tourist Information Centre is now “seeing the light”.
St Stephen’s was plunged into darkness when a faulty light fitting caused the main lights to fuse. Fortunately, no damage was done and, after some safety checks, the centre’s staff were able to carry on welcoming and serving visitors with the help of portable lamps and summer sunshine.
Local company Optimum Controls came to the rescue with a special, light-weight platform which was able to manoeuvre around the medieval church without disturbing the monuments and damaging the false floor.
Centre Manager David Stainer said: "They got the job done in a day so we only had to close for a couple of hours when electricians were operating near the door. We were able to provide a service without all the lights as we are used to putting other TICs in the shade!”
The TIC is open 9am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday and offers advice on days out, places to stay and a wide range of local books and gifts. There is also a summer art exhibition on, featuring the work of more than 20 local artists.
