Since most people have to carry out DIY at times when they are not at work, they may need to do work, such as redecorating or putting up shelves around the house in the evenings or at weekends.
The time when this sort of work is done needs to be considered carefully, particularly in flats or houses with a party wall, when noise can be easily transmitted.
Work on shared walls or floors between properties can be a particular problem. In these instances, it is advisable to notify neighbours before carrying out any work.
Reasonable times to carry out DIY
Ideally people need a rest from noise at the weekend and in the evenings. It is especially important if young children are involved.
As a guide, one-off noisy DIY activities should normally be restricted to the following hours where possible:
- Saturday 09.00 to 17.00;
- Sunday 10.00 to 14.00;
- Weekdays 09.00 to 19.00.
However, each case is different and if the noise goes on over a number of weeks, then further restrictions may be necessary.
Tips for neighbour-friendly DIY
- Make sure the equipment you use is up to the job - poorly maintained equipment or equipment in need of repair may make more noise and the job may take much longer than if you had the correct piece of gear.
- The radio - often, people put the radio on when they are doing DIY. If you want to do this, please consider your neighbours and keep the volume down, especially in the evenings.
